God himself is the author of marriage. The vocation to marriage is written in the very nature of man and woman as they came from the hand of the Creator. Marriage is not a purely human institution despite the many variations it may have undergone through the centuries in different cultures, social structures, and spiritual attitudes. These differences should not cause us to forget its common and permanent characteristics. Although the dignity of this institution is not transparent everywhere with the same clarity, some sense of the greatness of the matrimonial union exists in all cultures. The well-being of the individual person and of both human and Christian society is closely bound up with the healthy state of conjugal and family life. She sees in it the confirmation of the goodness of marriage and the proclamation that thenceforth marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ’s presence. In his preaching Jesus unequivocally taught the original meaning of the union of man and woman as the Creator willed it from the beginning: The matrimonial union of man and woman is indissoluble; God himself has determined it, ‘what therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder’. This unequivocal insistence on the indissolubility of the marriage bond may have left some perplexed and could seem to be a demand impossible to realize.

Can a non-Catholic divorced man marry a Catholic woman in the Catholic church? No, he can not. If he has been married before, he is free to marry in the Church only if his previous spouse has died or he has obtained a declaration of nullity from the Church for his original marriage. The mere fact of a divorce is not sufficient to prove the nullity of a marriage. During marriag…e preparation, you must inform the priest if you have been married before, even if in a civil ceremony.

You could be home having sex right now and experiencing God much more directly than you will here listening to me. MrsDarwin and I looked at each other and rolled our eyes. I’m glad that there has been good theological thinking and writing done over the last few decades looking at how the act of spouses having sex is not merely an expression of controlled lust or a way to have children, but a means of husband and wife physically expressing their love for each other and openness to the children who may come to them.

When these two people are baptized Christians, this natural institution of marriage becomes a sacrament.
